Q: I’m Bored. What Should I Do?

A: There is no reason to ever experience boredom. The key is knowing yourself well enough to determine ways to keep yourself occupied and entertained. Do you like being by yourself? Then you should have no problem with boredom. Read a book, watch a movie, or troll people on the internet. Do you like to be around other people, but do not want to actually engage in social activity with them? Go to the local shopping mall, park, or art gallery. Sit on a bench and watch the people. This can be entertaining all by itself, but for added fun you should create stories around what you see. If you are truly inventive you can make up an entire soap opera in one afternoon. Which frustrated housewife is actually an international jewel thief? Which uptight husband is wearing women’s lingerie under their business suit? Which toddler is going to grow up to be a lovable bad boy who ends up on the wrong side of the law?

Finally, are you a social butterfly who can not stand to be on their own? This requires the right attitude. All you have to do is pay attention and learn where and when a party is happening. Read the social event section of the paper, check out the bulletin board at the nearest university, and eavesdrop at any social gathering. As soon as you discover a party, you will stay busy preparing for the event. You might be wondering why I have not mentioned an invitation. The whole point of this is that you do not have an invitation. You are going to crash the party!

You could make sure that you are dressed appropriately for the occasion, but I think it is more exciting to go in whatever you happen to be wearing at the time. Just walk in with the attitude that you belong at this party, and then keep track as you insinuate yourself into groups of people. You will eventually be kicked out, so the idea is to see how long you can last before that happens! No time for boredom when you are constantly trying to avoid the people in charge while consuming as much free food and drink as possible. Just remember that the more alcohol that you consume, the less likely you are to avoid being shown the door.

Boredom is just a state of mind and knowing yourself can lead to contentment. And if you find yourself in jail you will at least have an interesting story with which to entertain your cellmates.
